USING MOBILE PHONES NOT LINKED TO BRAIN CANCER
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- The exposure to the mobile phone frequency electromagnetic is proven safe and will not cause brain cancer, the Dewan Negara was told today.
Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said the World Health Organisation (WHO) concluded that it was not linked to the risks of brain cancer like ionising radiation such as nuclear radiation.
"The cell phone frequency electromagnetic is categorised as non-ionising radiation, that is it does not have enough power to change the molecules in our body," he said when responding to a question from Senator Mohd Khalid Ahmad.
The study commissioned by WHO this year was conducted on 5,117 cases of brain cancer in 13 countries by 21 scientists, said Salang, adding that the cell phone non-ionising radiation resulted in an ear getting warm when one is using the mobile phone for too long.
He said to date the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had not received any cases of risks of brain cancer involving the use of mobile phones.
"However, the MCMC received 43 complaints about frequency interference from telecommunication towers and actions had been taken on the complaints," he said.
