Scientist eyes 39-day voyage to Mars

This NASA handout photo shows astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz, STS-111 mission specialist. A journey from Earth to Mars could soon take just 39 days -- cutting current travel time nearly six times -- according to Chang-Diaz, a rocket scientist who has the ear of the US space agency.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - – A journey from Earth to Mars could soon take just 39 days -- cutting current travel time nearly six times -- according to a rocket scientist who has the ear of the US space agency.

Franklin Chang-Diaz, a former astronaut and a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), says reaching the Red Planet could be dramatically quicker using his high-tech VASIMR rocket, now on track for lift-off after decades of development.

The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket -- to give its full name -- is quick becoming a centerpiece of NASA's future strategy as it looks to private firms to help meet the astronomical costs of space exploration.

NASA, still reeling from a political decision to cancel its Constellation program that would have returned a human to the moon by the end of the decade, has called on firms to provide new technology to power rovers or even future manned missions.

Hopes are now pinned on firms like Chang-Diaz's Texas-based Ad Astra Rocket Company.

"In the early days... NASA support for the project was rather minimal because the agency did not emphasize advanced technologies as much as it's doing now," Chang-Diaz told AFP.

NASA was focused instead on the series of Apollo missions that delivered men to the moon for the first, and so far last, times.

"They were mesmerized by the Apollo days and lived in the Apollo era for 40 years, and they just forgot developing something new," he said.

Chang-Diaz, 60, hopes that "something" is a non-chemical rocket that could speed a return to the moon and eventually allow for a manned trip to Mars -- long the Holy Grail for Apollonians.

His rocket would use electricity to transform a fuel -- likely hydrogen, helium or deuterium -- into plasma gas that is heated to 51.8 million degrees Fahrenheit (11 million degrees Celsius). The plasma gas is then channeled into tailpipes using magnetic fields to propel the spacecraft.

That would send a shuttle hurtling toward the moon or Mars at ever faster speeds up to an estimated 35 miles (55 kilometers) per second until the engines are reversed.

Chang-Diaz, a veteran of seven space missions, said this rapid acceleration could translate into a round trip voyage to Mars that would last as little as three years, including a forced stay of 18 months on the Red Planet, as astronauts await an opening to return to Earth.

The distance between the Earth and Mars varies between 35 and 250 million miles (55 million and 400 million kilometers) depending on their points of orbit.

And the use of ionized fuel could have the extra benefit of helping create a magnetic field around the spacecraft to protect against radiation.

Scaled-down models of the VASIMR craft have been built and tested in a vacuum, under a deal with NASA.

The next major step, according to Chang-Diaz, will be orbital deployment at the end of 2013 of a vessel using the 200-kilowatt prototype VASIMR engine, the VX-200.

Talks are underway with fellow space firms SpaceX and Orbital Science Corp to make that a reality.

Despite the hurdles ahead, Chang-Diaz sees the potential for a vast market for his technology -- maintaining and repairing fixing satellites or launching robotic and commercial missions to Mars.

His rocket may just launch NASA's brave new, commercial, world of space exploration.

Rahsia Asal Usul Tarian Poco-poco.

Alhamdulillah kerana kita semua masih bernafas lagi dgn keizinanNya.

Mungkin kita tak perasan kerana kita suka mengikut-ikut sesuatu yg baru tanpa usul periksa. Inilah cara musuh-musuh islam mengenakan kita sedangkan kita tahu apabila kita melakukan sesuatu yg menyerupai sesuatu agama maka kita dikira merestui agama itu seperti amalan yoga yg telah difatwakan haram kerana menyerupai agama Hindu. cuma tarian pocoh2 ini belum difatwakan haram lagi. Marilah kita sama2 fikirkan.

Bukankah Nabi SAW dah pesan melalui sabdaan nya ;

“Man tasyabbaha bi qaumin fahua minhum”.

Australia MPs call on Malaysia to drop Anwar case

Australia MPs call on Malaysia to drop Anwar case

SYDNEY (AFP) - – More than 50 Australian lawmakers have lodged a formal protest urging Malaysia to drop opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial and warning it will hurt the country's image, an official said Friday.

The group, which includes MPs and senators from both major parties, called for the case against Anwar to be abandoned in the interests of building "confidence in the impartial rule of law in Malaysia".

"Many friendly observers of Malaysia find it difficult to believe that a leading opposition voice could be charged with sodomy a second time, and so soon after his party made major gains in national elections," the protest letter says.

"It should be made known to the Malaysian government, that in our opinion, global esteem for Malaysia will be affected by these charges against Mr. Anwar.

"We hope that Malaysia's authorities will not pursue these charges."

Michael Danby, member of the governing centre-left Labor party and chairman of Australia's foreign affairs parliamentary subcommittee, said he handed the letter to Malaysian High Commissioner Salman Bin L Ahmad in Canberra Thursday.

"A lot of people know Anwar Ibrahim, a lot of people have been to Malaysia, and a lot of Australian parliamentarians think it's a shame that this is happening for the second time to the leader of the opposition in what is a developing democracy," Danby told AFP.

"We (feel we) should stand up and support a fellow democrat."

Former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull and Bob Brown, leader of the Greens party were among the signatories, as well as independent Senator Nick Xenophon and two minor members of the Labor Party frontbench.

Danby said the Malaysian high commissioner was well aware that there was a "wide spectrum of opinion in Australia" and the letter was not intended to inflame diplomatic relations.

"We hope it shows people in Malaysia and the opposition that we care," Danby said.

Anwar, who faces 20 years imprisonment if convicted of illicit sexual relations with a young former aide, has condemned the allegations against him as a political conspiracy to sideline the opposition.

He has accused High Court judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah of refusing to rein in "biased" media coverage of the much-delayed trial, which began last week.

Anwar was arrested in 1998 on sodomy and corruption charges but made a stunning comeback after being freed from prison in 2004. His sexual misconduct charge was overturned after six years behind bars.

FEDERAL COURT DECLARES DR ZAMBRY RIGHTFUL MENTERI BESAR

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir retains the Perak menteri besar's post after the Federal Court here today declared his appointment by Sultan Azlan Shah as constitutional. A five-man bench led by Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff unanimously ruled that the ruler had exercised his royal power to appoint Dr Zambry to succeed his opponent from Pakatan Rakyat, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, after he was satisfied that the latter had lost the majority vote of the state legislative assembly.

Alauddin sat with Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria and Federal Court judges Datuk Zulkefli Ahmad Makinuddin, Datuk Wira Ghazali Mohd Yusof and Datuk Abdull Hamid Embong.

Justice Arifin read out the judgment.

The conflict over who is the rightful menteri besar arose last year after three Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen quit their parties to become independents and the fourth jumped back from PKR to Umno, thus leaving the two sides with 28 assemblymen each in the 59-seat assembly. They were Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu (Changkat Jering) who resigned from PKR on Jan 30 and declared themselves as Barisan Nasional-friendly independents. DAP assemblyman Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) followed in their footsteps four days later.

COURT-PERAK 2 (LAST) PUTRAJAYA

Mohammad Nizar, 52, who is Pasir Panjang state asemblyman, was appointed menteri besar after the DAP-PKR-PAS alliance won 31 seats in the 12th general election on March 8, 2008.

Sultan Azlan Shah then asked Mohammad Nizar to step down as menteri besar and swore in Dr Zambry in February last year after declaring that the Barisan Nasional had the majority in the state legislative assembly. Mohammad Nizar did not tender his resignation as menteri besar to the ruler. He initiated legal proceedings on Feb 13 last year seeking a declaration that he is at all material times the rightful menteri besar of Perak and an injunction to bar Dr Zambry from discharging his duties as the menteri besar. On May 11 last year, High Court judge Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim reinstated Mohammad Nizar as the legitimate menteri besar after he ruled that Barisan Nasional did not take a vote of no-confidence against him in the state legislative assembly despite having the majority. However, it was back to status quo, when the Court of Appeal allowed Dr Zambry's appeal and declared that his appointment as Perak menteri besar was constitutional. -- BERNAMA JA AR JK

HIGH COURT ALLOWS FITRACO NV TO REMOVE 'EYE ON MALAYSIA'

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- The High Court here today allowed a Belgian company, Fitraco NV, to enter the site of the 'Eye On Malaysia', a major tourist attraction in Melaka, and relocate the ferris wheel.

Judge Anantham Kasinather, who made the ruling in chambers, also ordered Fitraco to restore the grounds once the ferris wheel was dismantled.

According to a lawyer for Fitraco NV, Leonard Yeoh, with the decision, MST AD Suria Sdn Bhd, which was responsible in bringing the observation wheel to Malaysia, had to bear RM35,000 of the legal fees for the lawsuit while Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EOM) another RM10,000.

Yeoh said Fitraco NV was at liberty to do anything with the ferris wheel, including selling it.

Besides Yeoh, Fitraco was also represented by lawyer Cheah Soo Chuan while lawyer Adillah Ahmad Nordin appeared for EOM and lawyer Azirizal Mohd Zaid for MST AD Suria.

COURT-FERRIS WHEEL 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR

Fitraco NV, as the original owner of the Eye On Malaysia, filed the suit on Sept 15, 2009, after the two companies failed to pay RM17 million for the rental and freight of the ferris wheel to Malaysia in 2006.

MST Ad Suria is the company responsible for bringing the observation wheel to Malaysia as part of the attraction for the Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

It was installed at the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa here before being transferred to the Sungai Melaka river mouth on September 2008 and operated a month later.

Since starting its operation in Melaka, the Eye On Malaysia is said to have recorded a revenue of about RM5 million.

The Eye On Malaysia, which became a major tourist attraction in Melaka, was seized on Jan 7, forcing it to grind to a halt.

Amnesty urges Malaysia to drop sex charge against Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30, 2010 (AFP) – Human rights group Amnesty International has urged Malaysia to drop a "politically motivated" sodomy charge against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, ahead of the trial due to start next week.

Anwar lost his final appeal on Friday for access to the government's evidence in a case which could see him jailed for up to 20 years if convicted of sodomising a male former aide.

Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and jailed a decade ago on separate sodomy and corruption charges.

"The Malaysian authorities have resorted to the same old dirty tricks in an attempt to remove the opposition leader from politics," Sam Zarifi, Amnesty Asia-Pacific director said in a statement issued late Friday.

"Malaysia's judiciary should throw out these charges."

Amnesty said it is "seriously concerned" over a fair trial for Anwar, especially after Friday's ruling which the watchdog described as an infringement of international fair trial standards.

"Anwar's case has rightly raised doubts among the international community and investors about Malaysia's commitment to justice and the rule of law," Zarifi added.

Anwar spent six years in prison after he was convicted in 1998 but the sex charge was eventually overturned. Amnesty had considered him a prisoner of conscience before his release.

After being freed Anwar reinvigorated the opposition and rallied it in 2008 to achieve its best ever results in national elections, when it won a third of parliamentary seats.

Anwar has accused the Malaysian government of seeking to convict him quickly as part of efforts to deflect attention against its own woes.
